I decided that not going to the supermarket is good in so many ways - I don't lose hours in the checkout line, my kids don't lobby me to buy ice cream and popsicles and chocolate, so I don't have to listen to all that whining, and I don't spend $ on gas (and everyone knows that is a huge budget buster here! Recently, one of the gas stations here lowered their price to under 7 NIS per liter, and I was so happy. Until I realized I must be crazy. It's still a TON of money.).
So, I'm trying really hard to stick to the pantry challenge.
Here's tonight's plan:
Tofu sloppy sams with pitot
Steamed kishuim (summer squash similar to zucchini)
Homemade oven-baked "french fries"
Melon
And now I'm off to spend the day with my kids!
Let me know what you're making, and if you're doing a pantry challenge, let me know how it's going!

Sounds good! We do not own a car, so it is a taxi to the supermarket and back. I am also trying to stretch the time between two trips. How long is normal for you?
ReplyDeleteI usually do a "big" run once a week. My dream is once a month but I just don't see it happening. In Florida I had 2 fridges - and a huge freezer. I literally had 3x more fridge space than I have now, so I would often shop for 2 weeks at a time, and then run to the fruit and vegetable market to keep us in fresh produce...(there was one right near my daughter's ballet studio, so that was part of my weekly routine). I'm having a hard time adjusting to the new reality - I still have the huge freezer, but only one fridge, and it's normal size, nothing huge. So I guess if I could go once every 2 weeks that would be great! And right now, if I'm near a store with a great sale on something, I do run in and stock up... I'm working on fewer runs to do only one errand. I'd much rather double or triple up. Gas is just too expensive...
ReplyDeleteOh the cost of gas. But 7 NIS/litre is a "good price". We were paying over 10 in 2008. Your menu for the day looks great. I like the sloppy joes idea - I will have to try that! Thanks for linking up on my menu plan post. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Mara! I usually make tofu sloppy sams once every two weeks, or so. Easy, frugal, fairly healthy... Enjoy! (and today I had the leftovers for lunch!)
